ANALYZAGE

Politics and Balance
In preparation for my Master Thesis I used collages not only to represent a certain topic in my work, but also as a analyzing board for myself to gather Information. It helped me to be more free and open about new topics and channeling them into sharper ideas for it’s thesis. Some of these Collage Analysis Boards could be used in the final Thesis, others had to be left out. Here are some examples with some quotes and excerpts from the book: Architecture and Utopias.

»Then the vision of an enormous town
presented itself, of a monstrous town
more populous than some continents and
in its man-made might as if indifferent to
heaven's frowns and smiles; a cruel
devourer of the world's light. There was
room enough there to place any story,
depth enough for any passion, variety
enough there for any setting, darkness
enough to bury five millions of lives.«

Conrad, Joseph. The Secret Agent. 1907.

The crisis of the grand projects began in the 60s with the rise of more critical views towards the 3 big meta-proj- ects of the era; Modernism as the cultural meta project,
Technoscientism as the technological meta-project and Socialism as the political meta project. Modernism was criticized because of its tendency towards standardiza- tion and functional mass production of the industrializa- tion which resulted in a critical loss of individuality. Technoscientism, established to achieve mastery over nature and its forces, is accused of causing the global ecological crisis. The decline of Socialism was caused by the association with authoritarianism, by the repression of the people and the inability of the system’s for sponta- neous regeneration
Excerpt from the Chapter : The Crisis of Utopia, The Crisis of the grand projects.

»Human history is littered with people who tried to build really huge projects with unproven technology.«
